Support Us

Our alumni and community support us in many different ways; through providing career advice to our current pupils, by attending events or by making a donation. We realise that all alumni connections have a great value to our school community, and if you think you can help us in anyway, please click here and get in touch

From the original legacy that launched the Boys’ School back in 1620, Merchant Taylors’ Schools has thrived upon the generous donations of others. Merchant Taylors’ has a strong tradition of providing academic excellence, whilst cultivating an all-round education for its pupils. Fee income helps to sustain this superb educational standard but we rely on the support of the wider Merchant Taylors’ family to provide essential funding for Bursaries and to build new facilities.

Alumni, parents, staff, Governors and family members of Old Boys and Old Girls all gave to Merchant Taylors’ in 2016/17. Thanks to them:

· 301 pupils benefitted from some kind of bursary support

· 115 people donated, with amounts varying from £5 to £1 million

· 20% of current pupils receive some form of bursary support

· £290,000 was given in donations

· 7 legacies were left to the schools, totalling £1,225,000

· 70% of our donors are alumni, 30% are friends of the school

What can donations achieve in the future?

· More bursary support for pupils to ensure that those with ability can attend the school – regardless of circumstance.

· The best possible facilities to support our pupils

Leave a gift in your Will

Merchant Taylors’ Schools in Crosby were founded in 1620 through a gift in the Will of John Harrison, a local man who became a Merchant Taylor in London. In recognition of his founding gift, the Schools bear the name of “Merchant Taylors”. Making a gift to the Schools in your Will is a very special way to leave a legacy, as it enables future generations of young people to enjoy the opportunities that an excellent education brings.

Whatever amount you choose to give will make a difference. Legacy gifts can be used to support:

Bursaries – allowing pupils with the aptitude to attend the Schools, but not the financial resources, to benefit from a Merchant Taylors’ education. As well as providing full scholarships, we also offer assistance to those pupils whose personal circumstances change whilst at school, so that they can complete their education with us.

Buildings – ensuring that our pupils benefit from the best possible facilities for many years to come.

Governors’ discretion – allows Governors to make informed decisions regarding Legacy gifts depending on the needs of the Schools at the time.

Legacy Gifts are acknowledged on one of the Memorial Honours Boards that are displayed at the Senior Girls’ School and the Senior Boys’ School, and in our Book of Remembrance. This can be done in the name of the Benefactor, or in the name of the person whom they are honouring, for example “Samuel Jones, In Memory of Susan Blake”.

However, we also understand if you would prefer to remain anonymous.

The John Harrison Society, named after our original benefactor, brings together those people who have committed to leaving the Schools a gift in their Will. Members are invited to exclusive events and receive VIP invites to key school events. For more information, please contact us (; 0151 949 9351) or click here to complete a Legacy Leaflet.
