Bolton School Pentangular gives MTJS yet another victory - John Smith reports

Our swimming team have had more success, this time in the Bolton School's Pentangular tournament. The team captain, John Smith, reports...

On the 27th of January Merchant Taylors' Swimming Team went to take part in the Bolton School Pentangular championships.
Only five schools in total participated - Bolton School, Bury Grammar School, Hulme Grammar School, QEGS Blackburn and Merchant Taylors!

The first event was the U 10's 4x25 m Medley Relay with Joe Hodkinson, Perry and Kyle Sanders and Harry Maitland-Titterton reaching 3rd place.

The second event was the U 11's 4 x 25 m Medley Relay and Tom Durband, Cameron Leece, Tom Hartley and I reached 2nd place!

The Under 12's (Harry May, Ethan Clark, James Alexander and Matthew Parslew) also reached 2nd place, the Under 13's (Josh Robson, Kieran Paxton, Oliver Morris and MS) also made 2nd place in the same relay events.

Event 5 was the 25 m Back crawl where Joe Hodkinson made a tremendous effort and reached 2nd place, Tom Durband of course won the 25 m in the U 11's. He seemed to take all his frustration out on the water which obviously helped him win!!

Harry May won the U 12's backstroke and Oliver Perkins Brown made a good 3rd place in the U 13's 25 m.

The 9th event was a difficult one to attempt, Perry making a good effort and coming in 3rd in the U 10's Breaststroke. I managed to come in first in the U 11's and Matthew Parslew copied my success in the Under 12's. Oliver Morris tried his best and came 4th in the Under 13's Breaststroke.

Well done to Harry Maitland-Titterton who came 3rd in the U 10's Butterfly and well done to Tom Hartley who managed to make it to 2nd in the U 11's. James Alexander managed a good 2nd place in the Under 12's but it was Josh Robson, as to be expected, who cleared 1st place for the Under 13's in the16th event of Butterfly!

We could have done better in the U 10's Freestyle, but Kyle still managed a 4th place. Cameron Leece put all of his effort into the U 11's Freestyle and won of course, as did Will Gilby for the U 12's. The U 13's made a good 2nd place.

Medleys came next, the U 12's securing a brilliant 1st place and the U 13's making it to a comfortable 2nd.

Now come the big points - Relays. Under 10's came 2nd, U 11's came 1st, Under 12's came 1st and the Under 13's came 4th.

All together we won the tournament at 139 points (followed by Bolton 126, Hulme 103, Bury 92 and QEGS 45).

On top of that the Under 11's and Under 12's races were won by Merchant Taylors'.

Well done to all the boys who tried and congratulations to all!

John Smith, J6D, Swimming Captain Junior School
