Chess Team make their move towards the National Finals

During the half term holiday, the boys of the Junior School entered the North West of England section of the National Schools’ Chess Championships.
Played in Ormskirk, the top schools from Merseyside, Cheshire and Lancashire met in the qualifying round to see who would reach finals for the top English schools in June.
MTS had an outstanding day, winning all five of their matches, achieving a 100% success record and moving easily through to the finals.
Results were as follows –
            1 v Ladymount B’        - won 4 - 1
            2 v St Michael’s ‘A’      - won 3½ - 1½
            3 v Trinity J S              - won 5 – 0
            4 v St Michael’s ‘B’      - won 4 – 1
            5 v Ladymount ‘A’        - won 3 – 2
All boys played excellent games, particularly against Ladymount and St Michael’s who are two of the best teams in the country and have an outstanding record in National Finals - they have provided players for the England team in recent years.
Two boys, Damon Chow and Tom Durband, deserve special mention for winning all five of their games.
The school team now look forward to a weekend in North Wales in June when the finals will be held.
