MTS boys junior school won the NW of England independent schools quiz competition on Saturday, in a thrilling competition held at our neighbours St. Marys Prep school in Blundellsands. There are 35 schools similar to ours in our region, stretching from Newcastle in Staffordshire to the Lake District in the north, and from the Wirral across to Macclesfield in the east.

Teams of 5 pupils had to answer ten rounds of questions and complete two mini marathon groups of questions in between the rounds. The topics included science, geography, history, current affairs, famous people, the royal family, sport, music and films. At the start of the last round, MTS were equal first with the Kings' School Macclesfield, just ahead of Bolton boys. The round was on general knowledge and the questions were in the form of the "Who wants to be a millionaire quiz." The first ones were easy, progressing to number fifteen - about as hard as a million pound question on the TV. The boys were unable to ask the audience or phone a friend !! The atmosphere was electric as the scores for the last round were read out. Bolton scored 11, Kings Macclesfield scored 13, and there was a pause before they got to Merchants. Ours was read out. It was 14 !!! We were the champions !!!

Congratulations go to our outstanding team of David Verghese (captain), Sam East, Sam Binymin, Louis Hatcher, and James Howe. We must also understand that the tremendous knowledge shown in winning this competition is in no small part, due to the work of the great teachers at MTS and the support of the parents who have encouraged the boys to achieve their potential. Well done to everyone concerned.
