MTS U11 vs Altrincham Prep

Friday 27 January

MTS U11 34 Altrincham Prep 7

If conditions were tricky on Saturday they were almost impossible on Friday when the visitors were Altrincham. The usual Hall Road gale was accompanied by occasional icy blasts of horizontal hail. To the boys credit they showed their toughness as the opposition wilted and refused to come out of the warmth of their huddle when we had run in our 5th try. They were persuaded to play on but were happy to head for the changing rooms after a sixth try swiftly followed and the final whistle went five minutes early.
The first half saw us score three tries, Poli breaking well from fly half to out-run the defence several times and initiate many attacks. Vernon ran strongly at inside centre but in the conditions it was difficult to get the ball as far as the dangerous Dundar lurking at outside centre and the wingers hardly saw the ball all day. Dundar finally got his chance in the second half sprinting over from an outside break on the half way line. Coulthurst also took his chance well when Vernon crossed the line but was robbed of the ball before he could touch down. But the best try came from Charlie Lucy who took a lovely pass from Dundar and slalomed his way past several flat footed defenders before sprinting to the line.
Two other notable moments were when the referee had to stop the game due to a spectator's umbrella arriving in the middle of a maul and when Mrs Morris showed where her son Harri gets his prodigious strength as she helped carry the substantial Max Vernon 200m to the pavilion when he injured his knee in the last minute.
