We were treated to a fantastic performance of Romeo and Juliet on 7th November. Read Lloyd Brookman's VERY comprehensive report...
On the 7th November a theatre company played Romeo and Juliet in the Junior Hall. For year 5 and year6 it started at around about half past 1 and finished at twenty past three and everyone took part. Some boys had to be big roles like Lord and Lady Montague or the servants for both Lord and Lady Montague and Lord and Lady Capulet. We had to remember some important bits and also who wrote the play this was William Shakespeare he also wrote lots of other good plays but I have to talk about the performance today.
The people started by saying that we will need a good imagination and listen carefully and then it started .The story was set in Verona in Italy, two families hated each other for centuries but it has been so long they can't remember why but they still fought. Then one day the Prince said if he caught one of the family fighting he would banish them or worse kill them!!! Then one day Lord Capulet asked one of his servants Peter, if he could give out the letters, so he did but the problem was peter didn't have his glasses with him. He saw Romeo and his cousin so he tried to get their attention; they saw him so they had a look at the invitations then Romeo saw an invitation for Rosaline the love of his life. Romeo and his cousin decided to gatecrash the party and went home to plan this. The party was going to be a masked ball so there was lots of planning to do.
That evening Romeo went to the ball in his mask and searched around the ballroom trying to find Rosaline but instead he saw Juliet with Count Paris. Lord Capulet was trying to persuade Juliet to marry Count Paris but Juliet took no interest in him. Juliet and Romeo's eyes met across the room and they fell in love instantly and Lord Capulet saw this and wanted to talk to Count Paris in the other room, this left Romeo and Juliet alone. Romeo and Juliet kissed for the first time but Juliet's nurse saw them so Romeo ran away from Juliet to another room in the house and the nurse left Juliet alone.
When Lord Capulet and Count Paris came back into the room Romeo also came back and saw the Count and Lord talking to Juliet but she was ignoring them. Lord Capulet noticed this and said to Romeo "Good night" so Romeo walked a couple of paces to the door, but did not leave but started waving at Juliet. Again Lord Capulet noticed and said in an angry voice "Good night!!" Romeo again made to leave but did not go and continued to wave at Juliet, so Lord Capulet shouted at Romeo Good night!! and eventually Romeo left.
That night Juliet went out onto her balcony and said "Oh Romeo, Oh Romeo, where art thou Romeo?"
Romeo was hiding in the bushes in the garden and jumped up and said "YES !!" and scared both himself and Juliet.
The next day Romeo's cousin and Romeo's best friend were looking around for Romeo but couldn't find him. Then suddenly Tiback, Juliet's cousin, saw Romeo's cousin and his best friend and said "where is Romeo? I need to talk to Romeo" Tiback had seen Romeo at the ball and had recognised his voice. Out of the blue Romeo walked down the street and Tiback said "no need to worry" Tiback said to Romeo " I need to talk to you" but Romeo's friend said "no way" this let to Tiback and Romeo having a fight and as fast as lightening in the middle of the fight Tiback drew out a knife and Romeo and his cousin got involved to try and save Romeo's best friend and they pushed Tiback away but the problem was that Romeo's best friend was stabbed in the stomach by Tiback. Romeo's cousin took Romeo's best friend to a hospital where he died.
Romeo's cousin told Romeo the bad news and suddenly Tiback reappeared, but Romeo took his knife and stabbed Tiback and Tiback died of his wounds.
However, remember that the prince said if he ever saw a member of the family fighting another family he would banish them. The prince knew that Romeo had killed Tiback so he banished Romeo from Verona forever!!
Juliet was so upset that she couldn't stop crying so her father Lord Capulet said to her "I have some good news Count Paris would like to marry you," but this time Lord Capulet forced Juliet to Marry Count Paris and if she refused he would make her homeless on the streets. When Lord Capulet left her bedroom Juliet said to the nurse "of course there is a way to get out of this" but the nurse said "I'm sorry, I think it would be a better idea to marry him."
Juliet decided to go to the priest and ask for a way to get out of this mess. The priest was unsure of what to do. Juliet threatened to kill herself with a knife, so the priest gave Juliet a potion that would "knock her out" for forty hours and said he would send a letter to Romeo to let him know where she would be buried so that he could come and rescue her.

Unfortunately the priests' plan went wrong and the letter did not get sent in time. Therefore Romeo saw the news of Juliet's fake death and decided to sneak into Verona and see her body. When Romeo saw Juliet he said to himself "I wish to lie with her" so he drank some poison himself and died. Straight after this Juliet woke up and saw Romeo dead and was heartbroken. So tragically she got a knife and stabbed herself. Then suddenly Lord Montague and Lord Capulet saw Romeo and Juliet and decided that they would never fight again.
All the boys had a fantastic time today watching the performance and I'm sure SOME of the teachers did too!!
