U11 SOCCER (AJIS CUP) v ST BEDES
MTS 1 ST BEDES 1 (after extra time)
MTS win 3-1 on penalties
Keeper Eren Dundar takes all the plaudits for pulling us through this tie with three heroic penalty saves after extra time had failed to separate the teams. Not only did he keep the ball out of our net, he also blasted home the winning penalty to send us into the quarter finals.
The coaching team knew it was going to be a tough afternoon when the opposition turned up with a whole set of paraphernalia just for the warm up. Worse still, it took 15 minutes before we woke up and realised we were in a game.
Luckily when Ollie Meadows was brought on as an early sub in the first half, things rapidly improved. His composure on the ball and astute passing gave us some measure of control. For all their skill and build up play in truth St Bedes created few clear chances in the first half, which culminated in an own goal giving MTS the lead.
In the second half we looked comfortable, with Michael Booth lively up front. Unfortunately he failed to convert a glorious chance when one on one with the keeper and when sloppy defending gifted the Manchester side an equaliser, the momentum shifted to the visitors again.
Extra time was evenly contested with few chances or scares, and luckily at the end of the procedings, cometh the hour cometh the man in the shape of Eren Dundar. However we will have to be much sharper if we are to progress in this tough competition.
