U11s victory over St Mary's College - report by Matty Virtue

On Friday 18 January MTS U11 played St Mary's. The match was held at Hall Road. MTS took the kick-off with Greg Rawsthorne kicking long against the ferocious wind.

Merchants forced some early pressure with the forwards working hard to win the ball. After just two minutes, Kieran Paxton picked up a loose ball coming out of the ruck just over the half way line. He made a driving run down the right, off loading for me to put the ball down over the try line. Unfortunately we didn't convert, largely due to the worsening wind. Merchants knew St. Mary's would hit back, so we held tight in defence but Mary's somehow broke through and scored a try, which they converted to take a 7-5 lead half way through the first half.

Merchants kept fighting still putting pressure on St Mary's, then Liam (still scrapping!) Jackson made an excellent run through the heart of St Mary's defence then passed under pressure to Greg Rawsthorne, who diverted away from numerous tackles to score a try. Harry Yip was unlucky not to convert due to a dodgy decision from the ref: who appeared to be looking in the other direction when the kick was taken. Typical teacher -  he must have had eyes in the back of his head!

St Mary's piled on the pressure in the second half  and we had to be strong in defence to keep them away from the try line. Merchants fought back towards the end of the game and pinned St Mary's back into their own half until the final whistle went to lots of celebrating.

Kieran Paxton was once again our solid fly half and Andre Lambrenos, returning from injury, made some important tackles in the centre. Henry Miller made his first team debut on the wing and put in some strong challenges.

Many thanks to the brave mums and dads who cheered us on despite the awful weather.  Is it ever sunny in Crosby?
