The Grange 5     MTS 33

Manchester Grammar 10     MTS 5

A tough week for the team with two matches in three days, but the performances show how much progress has been made. A big part of this was Harri Morris’ move into the pack from scrum half, enabling us to be much quicker and more aggressive at the rucks and retain possession better.

Against The Grange we dominated much of the possession and territory scoring 5 tries with good handling in the backs and energetic forward play. Massimo Poli was instrumental in much of our good work and the new centre partnership of Thorpe and Vernon was effective in attack and defence. Max Vernon helped himself to two tries with strong runs.

On Friday 18th November we travelled to Manchester to face a very powerful and athletic side but were disappointed to lose in a tight game.  Indeed we played most of the good rugby with the opposition employing a direct game up the middle, using big forwards to batter away. At the half time break we were 5-0 down, after defending most of the half. The coaching staff then pleaded with the boys to keep possession better, but in spite of lively runs from Powell, Poli and Morris, turning over the ball too frequently meant that we could not exert enough pressure on MGS to create tries. Some of this was in fact due to some dubious tactics at the rucks by our opponents. In the end the tireless Poli snatched what proved to be a consolation try.  Against teams like these our lightweights need to move the ball around more.

Meanwhile the B team were having a difficult afternoon against very physical opposition ending up on the wrong end of a 52-5 scoreline, Charlie Lucy crossing for our only try.

Apologies to parents for very late return from Manchester on Friday due to horrendous traffic in city centre of Manchester and on M62.
