Report by Ross Almond

On Tuesday 31st January Health and Fitness Expert Mr Trevor Jones visited the boys at Merchant Taylors' School in Crosby to educate them on how to enjoy a fit and healthy lifestyle.
This took place in the brand new, state of the art Sports Centre which opened in 2011 and is, in itself, a fantastic facility in which the boys can enjoy their sports.

When Mr Jones came in he looked as fit as any top athlete and explained that he was a fitness coach and went to lots of places teaching the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. He told the boys firstly to keep acitve by doing a variety of sports and then explained the goodness of fruit and vegetables and especially how important it was to try and eat your five a day .So no more chicken nuggets boys ! He also explained that you must spend time with your friends and family and to enjoy relaxation time, such as reading or listening to music to keep a happy state of mind.

Mr Jones then divided the boys up into four groups and gave them each an activity to complete. One of the groups was Ross Almond, Robbie Harrocks, LLoyd Brookman, Alexander Powell , Noah Williams, Dominic Mcgeowan , Alex Sweeney and Max Sumner. They were given the task of helping a teenage boy to become a better golfer. This they achieved by making suggestions for better all round health and fitness by trying other sports and increasing his fruit and vegetables in his diet.

At the end of the session the boys and even their teachers were put through their own excercise class by moving to fast pace music which they all enjoyed, indeed many of the boys told me that their heads were spinning with healthy ideas after Mr Jones's visit.

So here's to a fitter and healthier 2012 thanks to Mr Trevor Jones.

...and a report by Fraser Jones

On Tuesday 30th of January Mr. Jones came into school. He was really good and it was a fun session. First he taught us what the important things were for when it comes to health. He taught us about how we should have a balanced diet and how you should not get addicted to bad habits and you should get your body in a routine to doing good things like getting up at the right time and getting lunch at the same time as the days before and so you do the same good things everyday.

Then we split into four groups and he promoted us to a training coach. We were given a situation where we had to give tips to the people to improve their health and lifestyle. (E.g. my group had an old woman who was unfit and had no car and all her friends and family lived in the Lake District.)

After that Mr. Jones told us that breakfast is the most important meal of the day because it gets you ready for the day ahead and some of the boys said that their mums didn't have time for breakfast. Mr Jones said that they should make themselves a meal not just their family.

After the talk Mr. Jones put on some disco music and told us to do some movements. (For e.g.
"Step two times to the right and left and do a heel flick after every one.")
The workout was really fun and everyone enjoyed it!!!

I think it was really nice of Trevor Jones to come in and talk and do some fitness with us. I think it was a very good experience and everyone enjoyed it. We even got to see Mr. Wardle do some dancing and fitness!!!!!!

Trevor is Fraser's dad and we thank Trevor for coming in to share his expertise and enthusiasm with us.

...and another report, this time by Dillan Nathan

On Tuesday 31st January the Year 5 boys had an informative, action packed session with personal trainer Trevor Jones. This was to aid them in understanding their science topic this term which was ‘Health'. Mr Jones who is also the dad of one of the year 5 boys Fraser Jones kindly offered to educate the boys.

The session began after lunch in the sports hall. After a short introduction, the boys were asked about their fitness and had to talk about the things they did, in order to keep fit. Mr Jones listened and wrote it all down. He insisted on the importance of fitness and why it was necessary for everyone to keep fit. The boys found this very interesting.

It was then time for some group work. One of the tasks was to give advice a woman who had a hard job and three children. She had to come home after work to cook and received no help whatsoever from her husband. The group that were given this task did really well. They came up with plenty of amazing ideas such as using frozen food from the freezer, resting as much as possible and reading whenever she was free to calm her. Mr Jones agreed with the boys' answers as if the woman made the changes she would be less stressed and have a better mental well-being.

Then it was time for the practical part. The boys has to stand up and do some basic exercises like stepping, flicking feet, and lifting knees up high while jogging on the spot. They were all basic physical activities but by the end some of the boys were looking very tired.

By the end of the session the boys had had a full on practical fitness session as well as learning the importance of fitness. Hopefully, the session made many of the boys think twice about their diet and exercise and make wiser, healthier decisions in the future.
