Year 5 pay annual pilgrimage to Liverpool International Tennis Tournament

Year 5 had a great day at the tennis - Jonathan Liu reports...

On the seventeenth of June 2011, Merchant Taylors Junior Boys School visited Calderstones Park, Liverpool, to watch the ICAP Liverpool International Tennis Tournament. Featuring Mardy Fish, Laura Robson and Michelle de Britto, the tennis tournament displayed legends and new stars, mixed with the picturesque setting of Calderstones Park.

On a grey and dismal day, Junior 5 took a bus to Calderstones Park. The weather forecast for Friday 17th 2011 didn't help brighten our spirits, but instead the prediction dampened it. The forecast displayed rain throughout the day and it would take more than luck to evade the cancellation of the tennis tournament for today. As we arrived at Calderstones Park, sunny weather greeted us so our year group rejoiced and walked to the activity field where we deposited our packed lunches. Strolling to the tennis court, our class settled down to watch two coaches warm themselves up. After 6 games, we journeyed to the activity field to do some tennis activities including Jail, Round the world and some rallies. With not a drop of rain, the day soon began to get better and Junior five and their teachers' spirits began to climb. After the exciting tennis activity session, our year had their lunch. The highlight of the day came in the afternoon in the form of the tennis match as we watched some amazing tennis.

Featuring two players from Kazakhstan and Portugal, the match was an interesting and a very close one. The Kazakhstan player won the toss and served first and both players weren't able to break until the player from Kazakhstan broke the Portuguese's serve and eventually went on to win the set 6-3. Sadly we never had enough time to watch the following sets, but still we had a greatly enjoyable day. With tennis activities, tennis matches and much more, the Calderstones tennis tournament is an exciting, enjoyable and educational school trip which I highly recommend.
