Chinese New Year

Stanfield celebrated Chinese New Year on Friday 30th January. Many children took part, including reception and year 3. The reception classes dressed in Chinese clothes or in red and black and enjoyed a wonderful party with Chinese food provided by Mr & Mrs Lam.

A group of children ranging in age from five to eleven dressed in traditional Chinese clothes, led the dragon into assembly and explained to the rest of the school a little bit of Chinese New Year History. We learnt that 2009 is the year of the Ox and its formal name is Ji Chou. 2009 is year 4,706 in the Chinese calendar which has been in continual use for centuries. It came before the international calendar which is widely used; this only dates back 430 years.
Charlie in Reception stood up and recited a fantastic poem called the Dragon Dance; we were very impressed that he knew every word by heart! The reception children told the story of the 12 Chinese characters, they have been learning all about Chinese New Year. They have looked at and discussed a variety of Artefacts and participated in lots of activities creating Chinese dragons. They also enjoyed writing with inks and brushes.
