Merchant Taylors' Governors 2011-2012

Leo Coligan - August 2011

Leo Coligan was appointed as Chair of Governors to Merchant Taylors' Schools in Summer 2005 following 7 years as a Governor. He brought to the board a number of strengths and experiences which no doubt were developed during his time as Managing Director of the Liverpool Daily Post & Echo; as Regional Director for the north-west, and a Main Board Director Of Trinity. His vision for the Schools was energising and in the last 6 years he has revolutionised the Governance of the Schools, re-organised committee structures and was pivotal in the new builds at the Schools, notably the new Vitreum entrance hall at the Girls' School and the decision to build the new Sports Centre on the Boys' School site. It must be noted also that he took a leading role in appointing three of the current four Heads, the Marketing and Development Director and a new Bursar.

In the recent ISI inspection, the oral feedback called him ‘passionate', which was translated to ‘excellent governance' in the written report. Leo has always been passionate about Merchants, sending both his son Nick and daughter Lizzie to the Schools. He is a steadfast defender of the need for School Assisted Places and has very kindly agreed to become one of the Schools' Ambassadors for the 2020 Vision Appeal. As he stands down from his leadership of the Governing Body we wish him well and hope that he will now have time to focus on become a Grandfather for the first time as well as perfecting his golf skills.
