Merchants wins hat-trick of teaching awards
Teachers at Merchants are celebrating a hat trick of successes with Outstanding Awards from the Good Schools' Guide for the quality of teaching.
The industry bible bases its judgements on results over the last three years and the winners have been the Senior Girls' Classical Civilisation Department and the English Departments at the Boys' and Girls' Schools.
Both Schools were judged to be outstanding in English and this is the second time the Girls' school has achieved this prestigious accolade for English. The English Language and English Literature ratio for both schools was 80% AB grades and students in English Literature achieved 100% AB grades in two of the last three years.
The Girls' School had the best results for A Level Classical Civilisation in any English Independent girls' school. Over the last three years Classical Civilisation students have enjoyed an 83% AB grade pass rate against a national average of 58%.
Head of Classical Civilisation at Merchant Taylors' Girls' School Deane Lamb described the secret of their success as: "Excellent teachers who have a passion for their subject and can relate every aspect of its relevance to the modern world."
Head of English at the Merchant Taylors' Boys' School Dr. John Gill, said: "It is a two way process: we have excellent teachers who delight in their subject and outstanding students who relish the opportunity to learn."
