A level results at Merchant Taylors’ Boys’ School have continued to improve with the Crosby School achieving a 100% pass rate with 70% of all grades at A and B, up one percent on last year.
Three boys achieved 5 As: Simon McKeating, Matthew Routledge and Chris Rowe with another seven boys gaining 4 A grades: Chris Dietz, Tom Doherty, Ryan Hall, Ben Murphy, Graeme Parker, James Shepherd and Sam Sutton.
Headmaster David Cook said: “Merchant Taylors is committed to academic excellence and rigour. We are not concerned with our position in the national league tables purely for cosmetic reasons but they are a good indication of the quality of teaching and the boys’ hard work.”
Mr Cook highlighted the success of two boys who had achieved 4 straight As while on the Schools’ own assisted places scheme, bemoaning the demise of grammar school education and social mobility in the region.
Mr Cook said: “Since the closure of many of Merseyside’s grammar schools social mobility has declined. We are delighted that over 20% of Merchants’ pupils including Graeme and Tom have benefited from our generous assisted places scheme which has been supported by Old Boys, Old Girls and leading citizens for almost 400 years.”
Another success story at the boys’ school was Beijing teenager Wei Wu who came to Merseyside only two years ago with limited English language skills, but a massive desire to succeed. Wei has gained 3 A grades enabling him to study medicine next year.
