GCSE Results 2008
Merchant Taylors’ Boys’ School has achieved the best ever GCSE results.
Headmaster David Cook described the 70% A*A haul, up a massive 13% on last year, as “breathtaking”.
There was a 100% pass rate with 8 boys achieving a clean sweep of 9 A* or better. The awesome 8 were James Liu (Liverpool), Mustafa Farooqi (Waterloo), Jordan Bell (Birkdale), Jack Roberts (Birkdale), Mark Quigg (Kirkby), Abhinav Kishore (Blundell Sands), Joshua Pinedo (Southport), Nicolas Gillen (Southport).
The school was particularly delighted with its result in the international GCSE for mathematics with 26 yr 10 pupils taking the examination a year early with 23 gaining A* and 3 A grades.
Mr Cook said: “Although the Government league tables do not recognise this qualification, we believe it stretches young minds, and is better preparation for A level, giving our boys a stimulating intellectual challenge at an earlier age”.
Mr Cook added: “Overall the results are testament to the hard work of our staff and boys. Our excellent teaching methods inspire and stimulate the boys not only in their examination years but from the time they start school. We are trying to encourage a love of learning and a culture where success is the norm.”
Computer boffins at MTBS were delighted with the 24 boys who took the Information Communication Technology examination in their lunch hours. Seventeen gained A* and 7 A, taking only two half hour sessions during their lunch times.
Head of Computing, Steve Williams said: “It’s never easy when you have to compete with a young man’s stomach and we know that the lads wolfed down their lunches to fit in the voluntary lessons. Some of them even then went on to get in a game of rugby, living up to the Merchants’ ethos of both working and playing hard.”
