2020vision Merchants Connected Archives2009 A-Level Press Release
Merchant Taylors' Boys' School is celebrating all time record results.
A Level students at the 389 year old Crosby school enjoyed a 100% pass rate with a staggering 82% of all grades at A and B. Indeed over half of all examinations taken resulted in A grades for the Merchants' marvels.
This is a massive 12% jump on last year's 70% AB rating and up 9% the previous record of 73% set in 2007.
Headmaster David Cook said: "These results prove that you can have academic rigour and academic excellence. Boys at Merchants' continue to take the more demanding, traditional, tough options at A Level which the leading universities all favour. Many other schools boost their examination results by encouraging pupils to take softer options where it is easier to get the top grades but this has never been, and will never be, Merchants' style."
This year at Merchants' Boys' School 100% of all pupils achieved the top grades in French, 91% in Biology, while 89% gained A and Bs in Maths and 79% in Chemistry.
David Cook attributed the success to the quality of teaching and mentoring at the Crosby School combined with sheer hard work from the boys.
Mr Cook said "We have introduced a system of close one to one support in which the progress of each individual student is carefully monitored throughout their A level and GCSE courses. We hold regular academic surgeries in which all our boys, no matter what their academic ability, are shown how to improve their study and work habits and so ultimately their grades."
He added "For example we aim to stretch every pupil so boys don't just take Chemistry but enter the Chemistry Olympiad. It is the same for most other subjects."
"I must also add that Merchants' quite simply now has one of the best teams of academic experts in the North West who have inspired our boys to work hard and achieve their dreams."
