The Big Bang plays host to the finals of the prestigious National Science & Engineering Competition in the vast halls of the Excel Centre in Docklands East London in which Sixth Former Alastair Houston was comepting for 'Young Engineer of the Year'. He demonstrated his study of the laser welding of Super Alloys, conducted at John Moores University during last year's summer break. Alastair presented his work to the public and competition judges using posters, video and alloy samples.
In addition to students aged from 12 to 18 presenting their work, there were a large number of exhibitors from universities, industry, professional organisations and institutions such as the BBC who had a substantial presence. On the Thursday and Friday morning the young scientist competitors were poked, prodded and questioned by the judges. School groups only were permitted into the fair on the Friday, making for an exciting busy and hectic atmosphere.
Unfortunately Alastair did not appear in the prize list announced on Friday evening. The quality of competition was extremely high and he thoroughly enjoyed the experience. His work attracted interest from many quarters, but Rolls Royce seemed particularly interested.
