I am delighted to have been awarded an Armourers Corus Materials Scholarship as I am very interested in defence technology, including all forms of armour from that worn by medieval knights, right through to modern Kevlar body armour and military vehicle plating developed against IED in current warfare. Through reading about these areas on the internet I became aware of the scholarship.
The application process was very research intensive and I had to investigate various materials and their applications, ranging from space travel through to medical innovations, from industrial uses through to the every day. Materials science is involved in every aspect of our lives and is at the cutting edge of most new technology, and this I find very exciting. I had to write about materials in an area of personal interest and I chose sailing, focusing on how masts have been evolved from simple wooden structures onto extruded aluminium and then to newer advanced carbon fibre technology, where fibres can be specially aligned to take the strain under sail. My scholarship may be continued through my undergraduate course if I choose to study a materials related degree. I was presented with my award at a very grand ceremony and lunch at the impressive Armourers Hall in London in December.
The scholarship is offered through a prestigious partnership of eleven top universities, including, Cambridge, Imperial, Oxford, Birmingham and Manchester, working with Rolls Royce and Corus and The Worshipful Company of Armourers and Brasiers. It aims to encourage sixth form students to engage with materials science.
