In the Lower school the boys study observational drawing, painting, textiles and ceramics.
At GCSE Art the boys follow a journey which starts with a visit to the Albert Dock and Tate Gallery during the summer break, and continues in the Art studios initially via observational drawing developing work in which the boys experience a diverse range of materials and techniques resulting in each boy producing an oil or acrylic painting, a collagraphic print, a textile quilted machine embroidery, computer manipulated images and finally a ceramic pot.
A Level Art and Design
The study of Art and Design leads to an understanding of the importance of design in everyday life. Currently, the creative industry in the UK is growing at a significant rate, and the demand for graduates with good specialist art and design skills is enormous.
A whole range of careers await the successful graduate of Art and Design, whether their interest is in Architecture, Animation, the Fashion Industry, Interactive design, Textile Design, Advertising, or simply in the satisfying art of self expression.

The Art Department offers outstanding opportunities for boys to develop their imaginative and creative skills. They can enjoy a comprehensive range of facilities, including the opportunity to work in oils and acrylic paints on canvas with all completed work framed to professional standards and displayed in the school environment and outside venues such as Williamson Art Gallery and Museum and Tate Gallery Liverpool. Comprehensive Printmaking facilities including etching, lino printing and collagraphic printing are available. The department has a number of sewing machines enabling creative textile work. Our Ceramics facilities are excellent and this is reflected in the high quality of pots produced at all levels. The department has a suite of Apple Mac computers enabling boys to develop multimedia presentations and e-sketchbooks to support their coursework projects.
