Merchant Taylors' Boys Win Bronze
On the first Saturday of the October half-term break 36 teams from around the region competed in the annual University of Liverpool Physics Olympics. Sixth form Physicists take part in a number of practical and theoretical challenges throughout the day, and we were very creditably represented by Andrew Edwards-Bailey, George Johnson, Daniel Somervell and Alastair Houston, accompanied by Mr Toney observing. Our intrepid team performed consistently well, and their talent was particularly evident in tasks to estimate the elevation of lunar mountains, and in engineering a floating barge. The results for both individual events and the cumulative scores were announced in a tense closing ceremony, and it slowly became apparent that Merchant Taylors' School was in the medals for the second year running. This is a super result for the students, who until the day were unfamiliar with the events, and is a testament to their cool calm and collected approach to problem solving. Alastair hopes to be off to Cambridge next year, but perhaps the others would like to come along for the 2011 Physics Olympics, and with experience thus forearmed...........
