Design scholarships for four talented boys
Four of our talented Sixth Formers Ben Whittington, Matthew Dryden, Joshua Pernell and Matthew Jones have been whittled down from almost 800 applicants to be awarded an Arkwright Scholarship after successfully passing the Arkwright Aptitude Paper. This demonstrates flair and originality in solving Engineering Design problems and presenting GCSE work to a panel of interviewers, which the boys did in March of this year.
The Selection Process culminated in an interview for short listed candidates at one of six Universities. A team exercise presented by the university provided the interviewees with an experience of the challenge and excitement of engineering related careers. Scholarships are sponsored by Industry and Charitable Trusts and were formally presented at a ceremony hosted by The Institution of Engineering and Technology in London in October.
The Arkwright Trust was founded in 1990 and supports young people during their ‘A' Level/Scottish Higher years by awarding £250 a year to assist with the purchase of materials and books. Ben, Matthew, Joshua and Matthew will also carry the status of ‘Arkwright Scholar' into university. Head of Design and Technology Mr Taylor will receive £200 per year for the next two years and said "I am very proud that so many of our boys have achieved this prestigious award. 240 Scholarships are awarded nationally and for our School to have 4 of them is a major achievement."
