Merchant Taylors 1st XI vs KGV 1st XI 30/9/2009

Score = 4-1 (Rimmer x1, Booth x2, Armstrong x1)

Merchants played well throughout the game, capitalising on an array of defensive errors from their opposition. With the return of Danny Rimmer, the Merchants team had a strong game, with one blip in the match where KGV got a consolation goal.

Merchant Taylors 1st XI vs. Kings Macclesfield 1st XI 23/9/2009

Score: 4-5 (Booth x2, Armstrong x2)

Merchants had a strong start, going 3-0 up in the first half with some excellent hockey, passing it around the pitch well. Then Booth took a hit from behind and merchants were a player down, with Higham coming on to take his place. By half time it was 3-2.

Early in the second half Kings Macclesfield pulled one back to make it level, closely followed by another. Merchants were trailing 4-3. Merchants quickly responded to make it 4-4 in the last 10 minutes, but a last gasp winner from Kings Macclesfield put the game beyond Merchants.

Merchant Taylors 1st XI vs St Anselms 1st XI - 16/9/09

Score: 3-3 (Armstrong x3)

In a mixed team with the 2nd XI, Merchants had a tough match against St Anselms. Merchants struggled in the first half against the good defence of the opposition, who scored 3 times throughout the first half.

Merchants went off for the half time break and after the half time talk, came out prepared to come back into the game. This happened straight away, with Lawrence Armstrong playing upfront with Nick Crosbie, who combined to produce 2 of the 3 goals in the last 10 minutes. This was along with a goal from a short corner, bringing the final score to 3-3.

Merchant Taylors 1st XI vs Birkenhead 1st XI - 9/9/09

Score: 2-2 (Booth x2)

With a new team and a new coach, the 1st XI got off to a good start this season with a 2-2 draw with Birkenhead. With 2 players missing through injury, this was bound to be a tough match.

Having gone 2-0 down in the first half, Merchants pulled 2 goals back in the second half through Tom Booth who, having had a tough first half against the Birkenhead goal keeper, finally got the better of him. The second goal came from a mistake by the keeper who could no longer keep the Merchant's attackers at bay, and was superbly set up by Lawrence Armstrong.

The defence managed to prevent Birkenhead gaining a further lead in the second half, with an excellent performance from new goal-keeper Jack Roberts.

Overall, a positive and strong start to the season.
