Merchant Taylors' U16 vs Calday Grange - 03/10/09

Score: 1-8

After conceding a goal in the opening minute in each of the last two games, Merchants wanted to get off to a good start. This was not helped with a miscount that led to them starting the game with 10 men, but they fought hard and managed to hold Calday for the first ten minutes, thanks to mixture of good defending and goalkeeping from Merchants, and poor finishing from Calday. However, the breakthrough came after some good play by their winger. Once one went in, two more came in quick succession as Calday piled on the pressure. Another came just before half time as a well worked short corner left Luke Thwaites with no chance. Half time came and went, and after an inspirational team talk from Mr. Howard, Merchants came out fighting. However, Calday's quality was too much for the three man defence, and despite Ryan Payne playing well on his debut, Calday snatched another goal. Merchants' hard work was not without reward, however, as Joe Mansour won back the ball from a short corner and drilled the ball across the ‘D' where Harry Sawbridge, also making his debut for the under 16s, cleverly finished. Unfortunately, despite a great effort from the whole team (especially Michael Cheung and Eddie Cave) Calday managed to snatch three more goals with defence-splitting moves. Congratulations must go to Ryan Payne, with a promising display on his debut, and to Luke Thwaites, for tactically snapping his pad to shorten the match. Mr Howard's man-of-the-match award was not awarded due to lack of contenders.

M.T.S U16 XI V.S Newcastle-under-Lyme -  Saturday 26th September

MTS 1 - Newcastle-under-Lyme 3

U16

Bench: Benzie

After a slow start to the game for Merchant Taylors', and an early goal from Newcastle (who actually come from somewhere near Stoke), our under 16 started to get into the groove with a brilliant goal from Karl ‘Popcorn' Rawsthorne provided by Joe ‘Mr. Toney' Mansour. After our rocky start, the match started to get much closer with both teams getting their fair share of chances, but the scores stayed level thanks to a beautiful string of saves by our man of the match Luke ‘Twaities' Thwaites. But as fatigue kicked in during the last ten minutes Newcastle started to run our defence and midfield ragged, (see formation), and they took the victory with two defence splitting goals. First of the special mentions goes to our man of the match, without him it would have been a much heavier defeat. Second goes to Sam ‘Meaty' Birchall who played through his "swine flu" to make a big difference in the game. Also Eddie Cave and Tom Robb played exceptionally well, as usual. Very disappointed with Simon MacAdam's lack of commitment, although we probably did better without him. (Only Joking)

M.T.S U16 XI V.S Kings Macclesfield - Wednesday 23rd September

 MTS 1 - Kings Macclesfield 5

u16 vs macclesfield

The match was tough; we fought hard but just couldn't seem to get a firm grasp on the ball. Mickey was awarded man of the match due to his consistent hard work, speed and stick skill. Joe as usual played a blinder and could be relied upon to always be there. Special thanks should go to our fantastic keeper Luke Thwaites as he gave a very solid performance. Tom's excellent block tackles were put to the test this game however some anger management by Cave and he was able to direct his anger at the attacking team and pulled together with a great game. Potter played a magical game, however some of the spectators swear they heard him whisper a spell and the ball flew into the net without him even hitting it. Karl found his new position today and played a great game, this new position suited Karl and we seemed to have more ball possession in the second half. The final score was 5-1 to King's Macclesfield with good setup passes from Joe and Eddie allowing Potter to weave his magic. I believe this is the start of a new beginning of a successful era under Mr Howard.

Merchant Taylors' U16 vs St Anselms- 16/09/09

MTS 0 - St Anselms 4

The match began well, with our team playing in the Mr Howard textbook 3,1,4,1,1.
We started with push off. Although we lost a goal early due to a slight mistake, we recovered well, with Michael Cheung pushing right back up the field, causing us to get deep in to their D but not being able to put the finishing touches to a string of excellent passes. They recovered well and we conceded a short corner due to a foot on the part of one of our defenders. A shot rattled past over Tom Robb's Stick and hit the back boards to put them 2-0 up. After the restart we attacked well, but kept losing the ball into the hands of their very capable defenders, who thwarted many of our attempts to score. They countered our attack, but let the ball fly loose on the right wing, with a huge hit being put to it and it just being out of reach from the excellent run of Zohaib Akbar. We were under increasing pressure, and conceded again when they put an excellent string of passes around the back of our defence and scored what can only be described as an magnificent goal, even if they were our opposition. During the second half we conceded once more, although they had another goal disallowed. A special mention should go towards Ammar Salih and David McGowan for playing exceptionally well on their debuts and for Joe Mansour and Michael Cheung for playing also for the M.T.S 1st XI.
Mr Howard's man of the match was Tom Robb.
