Functional Skills ICT Qualification

ICT is recognised as a CORE Skill or Key SKILL together with Mathematics and English. Now Functional Skills in ICT are available for teaching from September 2010.
Functional skills are practical skills in ICT that enable everyone to work confidently, effectively and independently in life and at work.
They help us recognise good value deals when making purchases, in writing an effective application, or using the internet to access local services or online banking.
They are about using ICT in everyday situations - identifying problems or challenges, selecting from the knowledge that we have or knowing where to get it, and then applying that knowledge to find effective solutions.
The new Functional ICT qualification (that has been piloted by Merchant Taylors' School) is being introduced nationally across schools, colleges, work-based learning and adult learning providers for teaching from September 2010.
Functional Skills are being introduced as a response to calls from employers for more people to have these skills. A pass at Level 2 is equivalent to a Short Course GCSE at Grade B and so is particularly useful to those boys who have chosen not to study to study ICT at GCSE. All Year 9 boys were entered this year and over 80% achieved Level 2.
