MTS A-level Results
BOYS' SCHOOL
A level results at Merchant Taylors’ Boys’ School have continued to improve with the Crosby School achieving a 100% pass rate with 70% of all grades at A and B, up one percent on last year.
Three boys achieved 5 As: Simon McKeating, Matthew Routledge and Chris Rowe with another seven boys gaining 4 A grades: Chris Dietz, Tom Doherty, Ryan Hall, Ben Murphy, Graeme Parker, James Shepherd and Sam Sutton.
Headmaster David Cook said: “Merchant Taylors is committed to academic excellence and rigour. We are not concerned with our position in the national league tables purely for cosmetic reasons but they are a good indication of the quality of teaching and the boys’ hard work.”
Mr Cook highlighted the success of two boys who had achieved 4 straight As while on the Schools’ own assisted places scheme, bemoaning the demise of grammar school education and social mobility in the region.
Mr Cook said: “Since the closure of many of Merseyside’s grammar schools social mobility has declined. We are delighted that over 20% of Merchants’ pupils including Graeme and Tom have benefited from our generous assisted places scheme which has been supported by Old Boys, Old Girls and leading citizens for almost 400 years.”
Another success story at the boys’ school was Beijing teenager Wei Wu who came to Merseyside only two years ago with limited English language skills, but a massive desire to succeed. Wei has gained 3 A grades enabling him to study medicine next year.
GIRLS' SCHOOL
Merchant Taylors' Girls' School Headmistress Louise Robinson has described this year's A level results as ‘phenomenal'.
Girls at the Crosby School achieved a 100% pass rate with 78.8% at grades A and B and 54% at grade A.

Mrs Robinson said: "It's another phenomenal set of results across all subjects showing that Merseyside's top young women are a match for any in the country."
Three girls: Katie Payne, Tori Macoy and Sarah Fenelon achieved 5 straight A grades, while another 8 girls gained 4 straight As: Abigail Kaye, Eleanor Phillips, Becky Jason, Louisa Cummings, Sophie Bolger, Merhala Selvarajah, Katy Highet and Ciara O'Donnell.
Geographers were on top of the world after achieving 100% A grades with all 15 students getting top marks.

Maggie Hart, Head of Geography at MTGS said: "Results over the last decade have been consistently outstanding in Geography and we simply cannot do any better. While numbers taking this subject nationally continue to decline, girls at Merchants have bucked the trend."
She added: "We have a vastly experienced department who enthuse our students with a genuine passion for the subject. Not only does Geography provide a set of transferable skills including the ability to analyse data, predict trends and write detailed reports but it also educates our brightest and youngest in the most pressing issues facing the planet and a 100% pass rate at grade A show that Merseyside's young women have a strong social conscience."
