| Merchants Sixth Form was great preparation for life in university. Not only were you given freedom to choose the A Levels you wanted but you were fully supported by the presence of the staff and their subsequent advice on a number of important sixth form issues, from selecting A Levels to suggesting ideas for coursework and assistance with university applications via UCAS. Sixth Form was also a time forging friendships which lasted beyond school and into University. Although Sixth Form meant greater responsibility within the school, with VSU and Monitoring duties created a sense of community. Merchants’ Sixth Form was an enjoyable time of my life, and gave me an outstanding return on my scholarly, sporting and extra-curricular efforts over two years. One of the most important assets of Sixth Form at Merchant Taylors’ was that it allowed you to put as much in as possible, for maximum return! Patrick Myers, Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, Land Economy (MTBS 1998-2005) |
I really enjoyed my time at MTBS; however the years spent in Sixth Form stand out as the most memorable and enjoyable. I found that my relationship with staff developed very quickly into a more adult one based on mutual respect.
While I went on to study French and German at University, I found that all three subjects I studied were interesting and valuable. My studies in Economics not only had a theoretical benefit, but also had a practical side which, along with increased independence and responsibility gained during Sixth Form, greatly helped me to make the transition to university education.
Martin Rankin, University College London, French & German (MTBS 1998-2005)
Merchant Taylors\' is not just a school, it\'s a family. The relationships between the pupils and the staff are a huge factor in its success, and there is an extensive range of extra-curricular activities on offer, so everyone can find something to be involved with. Jamie Longstaffe, University of York, Economics (MTBS 2000-2007), Head Boy |
Sixth Form was certainly the most enjoyable two years at Merchants. Free periods and studying subjects that I saw a future in was a breath of fresh air. Our relationships with the teachers were more relaxed and everyone really pulled together to get ready for university and our final exams. A fantastic time.
Simon Herzberg, Cambridge University, Classics (MTBS 2000-2007)
Possibly one of the best aspects about school life at Merchant Taylors’ Sixth Form is the excellent relationships between pupils and staff. There exists an atmosphere of mutual respect in which the staff encourage the pupils to achieve their potential, through the toils of A level exams, UCAS forms and University admissions. Merchant Taylors’ Sixth Form treats its pupils more as adults, enabling each young person to succeed, both academically and socially. Jonathan Kellaway, University of York, Economics (MTBS 2000-2007) |
My Merchant Taylors’ School career culminated in a successful and very active Sixth Form experience. The atmosphere amongst the students was consistently friendly and supportive and relationships with staff were very positive, based on mutual respect and a genuine desire for everyone to achieve their best. The real strength of the school though is the wide range of extra-curricular activities. I cannot imagine a more positive experience.
Nick Murthwaite, University of Nottingham, Geography (MTBS 2000-2007)
I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Merchants’ especially studying the sciences and playing rugby. The staff were enthusiastic and pushed you to achieve your potential. Jon Cheesbrough – University of Liverpool, Medicine (MTBS 2000–2007) |
Why was life at MTS so wonderful - The strong sense of community which develops both through student-teacher relationships and peer to peer, combined with fantastic facilities both in terms of academic and sporting, create a very pleasant working environment. As a student you feel as though you are part of team, there is a lot of banter but you always feel that you can speak to anyone whether it is concerning academic work or a pastoral issue.
Jack Herlihy, Robinson College, University of Cambridge, Land Economy (MTBS 2001- 2008)
The best thing about the sixth form is there is a wide range of people so you can easily make friends. Also the teachers are great and are very helpful. There are some fantastic subjects like Economics and I found my time at Merchants to be very enjoyable. Andrew Chung, University of Leeds, Economics & Chinese (MTBS 2001-2008) |
I really enjoyed the sciences at Merchants with teachers who brought the subjects alive. At A Level I enjoyed Geography with the staff being very friendly and giving sound advice. Sport at Merchants is enjoyable and the school has given me a great start in life.
Kieran Rowan, University of Liverpool, Medicine (MTBS 2001 – 2008)
