Old Crosbeian's 2011 Golf Report

Old Crosbeians' Golf Day 2011

The annual Old Crosbeians' Golf Competition took place at the West Lancashire Golf Club, Blundellsands, on Friday 10th June 2011.

Dark and brooding clouds were building up over the River Mersey as 26 intrepid OC golfers and their guests prepared to do battle with the renowned links.

Some of the players doubted the sage words of the organiser Ian Duckett that all would be well with the weather and that the threatened rain would not be deposited on them but rather on the unsuspecting residents of Ormskirk and Warrington.

The doubters had obviously forgotten, or had never been privileged to hear, the teaching of the revered Granville Jones on the subject of geographically important micro-climate of the cricket pitch at Hightown and the links at Blundellsands.

Despite the absence of some of the regular stars of OC golf (you know who you are!) there was a strong field, strong that is in the category of candidates who would be in contention for the 'most golf played' trophy, an award second only to winning a 'major' for golfers of a certain calibre.

There were indeed rumours of an illegal betting wager being struck by two of the leading contenders (John Duckett and Andrew Thompson) but Andrew proved beyond doubt that he was more than capable of handling the pressure and winning the trophy for a second successive year.

In the evening 42 OCs and their guests enjoyed the traditional OC Golf dinner menu and the Lady Captain of West Lancashire, Mrs Bernadette Metcalfe, kindly presented the trophies and prizes.

The winners and runners up in each category were as follows:

Winner Runner Up
Scratch Cup - Nick Goodwin Dave Croft
Handicap Competition - Mike Chambers Richard Thompson
Seniors Trophy - David Anderson Barry Anson
Visitors Prize - Tony Metcalfe Tony Towse

The sweep for the highest Stableford points score went to Mike Chambers, with a very impressive 39 points, with Nick Goodwin, playing off a handicap of 6, carding an impressive gross 81 to take the scratch prize.

Both Mike and Nick were first time OC golf winners and it was good to see some new and younger faces, including 3 members of the School Golf Team, at this year's event.

The 2012 competition will be played at West Lancashire on Friday, 8th June 2012 and, if anyone is interested in playing, they should contact Ian Duckett NOW on 01704 871863 or via email at ian@ianduckett.freeserve.co.uk and he will add their names to his mailing list.
