Sandhurst Scholarship for top cadet

Watching the sacrifices made by the British Armed forces overseas drove Sixth Former Kieran Horan to apply to Sandhurst. The muscular 6ft 4ins athlete and academic has now been rewarded with a valuable army scholarship that will part-fund his Sixth Form and university studies.

Kieran, 16, who intends to be a career soldier, said: "It was simply a sense of duty that led me to apply. I couldn't watch others making those sacrifices and not feel that I ought to make the same commitment." Kieran, who has been in the Army Section of the Merchant Taylors' Combined Cadet Force since the age of 14, added: "Of course I appreciate that an army life is not for everyone nor would I expect anyone else to make the same decision, but it is a matter of personal conscience and my conscience told me that I should apply to Sandhurst."

Kieran, who will study English, History, Geography and Mathematics, in the Merchants' Sixth Form, and then hopes to study History at university, said: "The modern soldier must learn the lessons of history but equally must embrace today's technologies so that fewer men can be more effective in their peace keeping roles."

CCF Commanding Officer Major Paul Irvine said: "Sandhurst only offers scholarships to those candidates who clearly demonstrate that they have the potential to lead and Kieran is a fine young man who very much falls into that category."
