2020vision Merchants Connected ArchivesThe Presidential Jewel
Photographs provided by Harrison "Curly" Cail, President 2000-2001.
Up to 1964 the Association did not have a jewel, as photos of earlier dinners clearly indicate. (See Crosby 1948 and London 1961 in our Photo Library). The President for the year 1963-64, R. Emrys Jones, repaired this omission when he presented to the Association the very fine jewel depicting the Arms of the Merchant Taylors' Company. The suppliers are believed to be the jewellers Boodle and Dunthorne. The reverse bears the text "Given by Emrys Jones - President 1963/64".
The original ribbon was blue but, when the Very Reverend R.A.K. Runcie assumed the presidency in 1983, it was deemed more appropriate that the ribbon should be in ecclesiastic purple, and this has never been replaced.
