Under 12 Sevens Rugby Champions
On Friday 7 March the senior boys’ school Under 12s won the Wirral Sevens Tournament. This now means that they have won the trophy two years running. Sixteen schools entered the competition.
After comfortably winning (34-0, 36-10, 27-0) their group the team quickly dispatched Kirkham in the breakout stage 42-0 to progress to a tough semi-final against St. Anselm’s. The first half proved to be a close affair, with both sides scoring lots of tries, but Merchants eventually ran out comfortable winners 36-10.
In the final against the very strong home team, Wirral, the boys finished the first half seven points down. The second half saw a strong revival and some excellent support play and decisive running. Merchants scored three tries, two of which were converted and won the match decisively 19 points to 7.
