Under 15s Hockey Stars

Three young hockey stars from Merchant Taylors' have been fast-tracked into the Hockey Associations' under-15 North-West Development Squad.  Alex Whalley, Tom Wrigglesworth, and Nick Crosbie have been chosen from the Lancashire squad for one of eight regional development squads nationwide. Each boy has his own strengths: Tom Wrigglesworth is 14, from Southport, and is described as a powerful defender with strong stick skills. 15 year old Crosby hockey star Nick Crosbie is a talented midfield player with good tacking and distribution skills, and Alex Whalley, also 14 and from Bickerstaffe, is a resolute defender with strong stick skills.

All the boys play or train virtually every day, both at Merchants' and at their clubs; Bowdon for Alex, Southport for Tom and Nick at Northern.

Merchants' Head of Hockey, Simon Sutcliffe, said: "They are promising young players who show talent and dedication who have been spotted early by the national system. All three boys benefitted from Merchants' 2007 hockey tour of South Africa, which set them on a steep learning curve and where they witnessed a high level of commitment from other young hockey players."
