Visit to HMS Astute
Merchant Taylors' School CCF have the good fortune to be affiliated to the brand new nuclear powered submarine HMS Astute. During a visit to the School, the CO, Commander Mike Walliker, enquired of Lieutenant-Commander Freedman if some of the School's physics students and cadets might like to visit the submarine currently being fitted out at Barrow-in-Furness. We accepted the invitation with great enthusiasm and thirty staff and students made the trip.
Guided around the craft in small groups by members of her crew, we saw the torpedoes & missiles, living accommodation (very cramped), nuclear reactor, control room and the rest. We had considerable opportunity to ask many questions, a few of which were countered with the Official Secrets Act!
This marvellous opportunity was both educational and inspirational and we would like to thanks all those who made this possible.
