Seven Oxbridge offers for young academics
Academic high flyers were in seventh heaven after winning offers from Oxford and Cambridge universities.
After rigorous interviews and assessments, a magnificent seven young women will be progressing to the world-renowned ancient seats of learning dependent on their A Level grades.
Alice Cantell Hynes, 17 from Crosby, has an offer to read Materials Science at Corpus Christi, Oxford. Alice would eventually like to take a PhD and work in scientific research.
Meriel Cunningham, 18, from Blundellsands, has an offer to read Chemistry at St. John¹s College, Oxford. Meriel has won a choral scholarship and after her chemistry degree hopes to study Music as a PhD aiming to become an international opera singer.
Abbie Cavanagh, 17, from Formby, has an offer to study Theology at Regent's Park College, Oxford, and hopes to use her degree to work to develop ethical approaches to contemporary medicine.
Madhumita Shrotri, 17, from Crosby, has an offer to read Medicine at Christ Church College, Oxford, and wants to become a surgeon.
Lauren McNally, 18, from Southport, has an offer to read Engineering at St. John's College, Cambridge, and hopes to work at the vanguard of electronic engineering.
Kate Burns, 17, from Crosby, has an offer to read Chemistry at Balliol College, Oxford, and hopes to work in scientific research.
Rebecca Kane, 17, has an offer to read Biological Sciences at Newnham College, Cambridge. Literally a high flyer, Rebecca has an RAF gliding scholarship and ultimately wants to work developing cures for cancer.
Headmistress Louise Robinson said : "This represents a strong performance from a single academic year with girls winning offers from top colleges to read highly competitive subjects." Mrs Robinson added: "We also expect girls from Merchants' to progress to Britain's other leading universities."
