Merchant Taylors' Girls' School A Level Press Release - August 2010
Consistency is the key to success at Merchant Taylors' Girls' School says Headmistress Louise Robinson.
This year, as in the previous four years, nearly 80% of A Level students achieved the top grades of A*, A and B with over 50% getting A* and A grades. The girls also achieved 100% pass rate.
Mrs Robinson said: "In a year when there has been much alarming controversy about the failure of some A Level candidates to get into their first choice universities our results mean the vast majority of our girls have secured their chosen courses at their preferred universities. Long term success has been built on excellent teachers working closely with well motivated students and their highly supportive families."
Mrs Robinson added: "We very much welcome the introduction of the new A* grade which is an extra motivation for the talented student and we are pleased to report that the top grade has been awarded across the most demanding subjects including Maths and the three Sciences."
Star performers include Moockey Li who came to Merchant Taylors' from Guangdong Province in China only 2 years ago, barely able to speak English but has progressed to gain 2 A* and 1 A in Maths, Physics and Chemistry qualifying her to read Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College.
Other star performing girls were Fehn Chua-Short, from Crosby and Elizabeth Bramhall, from Formby, who both achieved 4A*. Fehn will go on to study Natural Sciences at Jesus College, Cambridge. Two girls, Karen Pinto from St Helens and Victoria Wijeratne from South Liverpool gained a remarkable 3A* and 1 A.
Ormskirk's former Northern Hockey star Nicole Whalley proved that she is just as nimble in her mind as on her feet gaining 1A* and 3A. Nicole is going on to read Medicine at Birmingham.
Amber Anirah, from Bootle, came to Merchant Taylors' Girls' School on an assisted place. With her A* achievement in French Amber will be jetting off to France in September having gained a place at the prestigious University of London Institute in Paris to study a BA in French.
