2011 Examination Results

In the Chemistry Department we teach Chemistry as a separate science for the first three years. During Year 9 the girls choose between studying Chemistry at GCSE as a separate science or Chemistry as part of the Core and Additional Science Course. In both cases the AQA specification is followed, generally at the Higher Level.

During the Years 12 and 13 (Lower and Upper Sixth) we also follow the AQA specification. It is usual for up to 60 girls to be studying 'A' Level Chemistry in the Sixth Form.

In their Upper Sixth year girls have an option of studying for and sitting the Advanced Extension paper in Chemistry and also entering the Chemistry Olympiad competition.  All teaching in the Chemistry department is carried out by expereinced and dedicated members of staff.

Facilities

We have 3 laboratories that are used for the study of Chemistry.

  • C3 - Sixth Form laboratory
  • C1 and C2 - larger laboratories used for all years.

Most girls below Sixth Form have all their lessons in Chemistry laboratories. In the first three years nearly all lessons involve practical work. Most of the Sixth Form lessons are also in laboratories - at least one double lesson is spent in one of the larger labs, C1 or C2.

Overall Aims and Objectives for the Chemistry Department

Aims

  • To educate the pupil in the fullest sense in the context of scientific, and in particular, chemical ideas, so that she begins to realise her academic and personal potential, as well as to enjoy the subject.
  • To create a happy and caring environment within the laboratory in which pupils can develop a sense of their personal worth.
  • To develop a clear understanding of the safe behaviour expected in a laboratory and the respect and concern for each other that will result in sensible and confident control of risks and hazard.
  • To develop an atmosphere that encourages each pupil to be willing to think about and begin to make judgements about problems of a scientific nature.

Objectives:

To encourage the girls to:

  • Acquire knowledge and skills in terms of literacy, numeracy and practical requirements.
  • Have levels of expectation of themselves that are both realistic and demanding.
  • Think about the positive and negative effects of scientific and technological developments on the environment and in other contexts.
  • To exercise self-discipline and to take account of other people's views and to understand why opinions may differ.
  • Gradually increase the ability to use quantitative analysis of their work and to generally increase their skill at analysing and evaluating their own work and studies.
  • Learn how scientists work together to increase scientific knowledge and understanding and also the importance of experimental evidence to support this.
