The Classics Department at Merchant Taylors' Girls' School is a long-established and successful department. Members of the department are encouraged to teach in a dynamic and innovative way and are supported by a wide range of resources. ICT plays an integral part in many of the courses available and in a recent ISI report the department was praised for its use of ICT as a teaching strategy.
The department also offers a number of extra curricular activities including a lunch time Greek Club, where pupils are introduced to Ancient Greek and follow a series of tests offered by the East Midlands Association of Classical Teachers. Trips to Italy and Greece are now annual events and visits are also made to the British Museum in London, the annual festival of Greek drama, the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and performances of Greek drama in Liverpool and Manchester. Pupils also have the opportunity to participate in the North West Latin Reading Competition.
