2020vision Merchants Connected ArchivesDuke of Edinburgh
Taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award is a popular activity for girls from Year 10 upwards and the group is flourishing. Each year about forty girls actively undertake the Bronze Award and this year 30 girls are continuing to Silver. A number of girls go on to take the Gold Award in the Sixth Form, necessitating two four-day Gold level expeditions in the summer holidays.
The Award gives girls the opportunity
- To give sustained service to the community in which they live
- To develop new talents, to take exercise beyond the bounds of school P.E.
- To accept the challenge of completing a journey across the countryside, camping out and carrying everything they need
- Finding their own way in unfamiliar territory and learning to rely on themselves lead to an increased sense of achievement.
Training
Training is given for expeditions after school one evening a week and there are training days organised in the spring term to practise the skills learnt during the in-school training sessions. Support and advice is available for all sections of the award. Usually four Bronze and two Silver expeditions are carried out during the warmer part of the year.
