Elspeth Hamilton Exhibition
Elspeth Hamilton is the second major artist, following the opening show of Liverpool sculptor Tony Evans, to exhibit in our new Vitreum art gallery. Elspeth, a distinguished architect and environmentalist, who spent most of her working life in London and Cornwall, attended Merchants' from 1947 to 1953. Our current artists are enjoying the chance to study the work of the former pupil in the exhibition.
Her work ranges from oils based on fragments of the ecclesiastical masters to naturalistic landscapes many completed on a brief return to her hometown in advance of this special exhibition. "I had not been back to Liverpool for so many years and wanted to have something in the exhibition which gave my impression of the Merseyside landscape."
Elspeth added: "I like to paint from edge conditions, that is as if I was standing on the edge of a cliff, and looking down at the landscape. I like to capture the natural energy of the environment at a specific moment in time."
Elspeth uses the proceeds from her artistic work to build and promote her own major art environment in Cornwall, where she has already planted over 2,300 trees. "It has been designed to stimulate creativity and playfulness in the young, using landscapes, trees and sculptural form to stimulate a sense of wonder and enhance natural principles."
Mr Gill, Director of Art, said: "The studio gallery provides a unique opportunity for our students to be inspired by the work of contemporary artists, across a range of media including 2D painting, sculpture, installations or video performance. We are currently working on developing partnerships with major city centre galleries such as the Tate to bring more great work to the village."
