Trip to Iceland April 2011
Our first stop in Iceland was at the Blue Lagoon Geothermal Spa and this was exactly what was needed to soothe away our journey fatigue. Swimming in the 38ºc water was sheer heaven and the silica mud we liberally applied to our faces turned back the clock (or so our tour guide promised us!)
The following days were packed with viewing spectacular scenery and features we had previously only read about in text books. The awesome Skogafoss and Gulfoss waterfalls and gorge; Strokkur the geyser which kindly erupted twice whilst we were on site; walking and sliding on the Solheimajokull glacier tongue; soaking up the atmosphere and views in the no man's land between the North American and Eurasian plate boundaries; and seeing a whale in the stormy sea off the black basalt cliffs and beach near Vik.
The trip was rounded off with a morning of sightseeing and souvenir shopping in Reykjavik which has to be one of the quietest and most laid back capital cities in the world (shops didn't open until 11am on Saturday!)
Iceland is truly a geographer's paradise and we will definitely return.
Lower 6th Hydrology trip to Preston Montford - March 2011
The Lower 6th Geography group braved the wind, rain and cold to spend 3 days at a field study centre in Preston Montford, Shropshire last week.
They spent several hours studying the changing characteristics of the river valley and channel in Ashes Hollow in the Long Mynd. Measurements were taken from 12 sites before returning to the centre to present and analyse their data. A visit was also made to Shrewsbury to study the flood risk and see the flood defences.
The girls worked very hard and truly earned all the cake they ate at afternoon tea each day!

Sixth Formers visit Liverpool to study urban change - Feb 2011
On a bright but cold February day, the Upper Sixth geographers set off for their visit to Liverpool to study urban change. With all the redevelopment taking place in Liverpool 1, the Kings Dock area and the Pier Head, and the fact that the city still has some of the most deprived inner city areas in the country, means that Liverpool is an ideal location to use as a case study for the World Cities option at A2.
The tour of Liverpool included stops at the Pier Head, Albert Dock, the former Garden Festival site, Princes Road, Vauxhall, Eldonian Village and Everton Brow. See photos of the field trip below:

More Year 7 Geography work on Relief
Inspired by their classmates, Charlotte Mawdsley, Rosie Aslan and Victoria Pennington also made contour models out of cakes!

Year 7 Geography Work on Relief
Madelaine Heathcliffe-Core and Ariana Horrocks of 7W created a contour model showing the layer shading technique. They baked sponge cake and decorated it with coloured buttercream. The result looked good enough to eat and that's exactly what 7W did!
