Mathematics

Mathematics is a popular subject. It is taught by a team of 5 teachers, Dr Barge (Head of Department), Mr Wood (second in Department), Mrs Hurst, Mrs Carter and Mrs Stevens. There are 5 Mathematics teaching rooms in the Thompson Building, where the Department also has the use of a small computer room. In Year 7 Mathematics is taught in form groups but from Year 8 to Year 11 girls are taught in sets. All girls take the new AQA Higher Tier GCSE examination. When considered appropriate, set 1 may be accelerated to sit GCSE in Year 10 and commence the AS course in Year 11.

In the Sixth Form between 20 and 30 pupils normally choose to study Mathematics. They follow the M.E.I. Structured Syllabus administered by OCR. There is considerable flexibility available in the combination of modules studied. The opportunity also exists to study sufficient modules to achieve either AS or A level Further Mathematics. All members of the Department teach in the Sixth Form.

Pupils take part in a number of Mathematical competitions each year including the Challenges set by the Liverpool Mathematical Society and the UK Mathematics Trust. Fun events are also organised at school from time to time and are thoroughly enjoyed by staff and girls.
