2011 Examination Results

Mathematics is an extremely popular subject in the school. It is taught by a team of five teachers, Dr Barge (Head of Department), Mr Wood (second in Department), Mrs Hurst, Mrs Carter and Mrs Bradshaw. There are 5 Mathematics teaching rooms in the Thompson Building, where the Department also has the use of a small computer room. In Year 7 Mathematics is taught in form groups but from Year 8 to Year 11 girls are taught in sets. All girls take the new AQA Higher Tier modular GCSE examination. Where appropriate, girls in Year 11 are also given the option of studying the new AQA Further Mathematics GCSE-level Certificate.

In the Sixth Form between 20 and 30 pupils normally choose to study Mathematics. They follow the AQA syllabus. There is considerable flexibility available in the combination of modules studied. The opportunity also exists to study sufficient modules to achieve either AS or A2-level Further Mathematics. All members of the Department teach in the Sixth Form.

Pupils take part in a number of Mathematical competitions each year including the Challenges set by the Liverpool Mathematical Society and the UK Mathematics Trust. There are also additional sessions at lunchtime for the most able girls across the school. Fun events are also organised from time to time and are thoroughly enjoyed by staff and girls.
