2011 Examination Results
Modern Foreign Languages are taught in a modern suite of four rooms in the Centenary Building, with all of the rooms having interactive whiteboards. Ipods are used regularly for listening work across all year groups.
Currently all girls joining Year 7 begin French and this is taught in tutor groups. At the end of Year 7 girls opt to take another Modern Language, either German or Spanish, which they study in Year 8. Girls also continue to study French. At present in Year 8 there are 3 groups of Spanish and one German. In Year 8 girls are placed into one of four divisions in French, this structure continues into Year 9.
In Year 9 girls are placed in one of 3 divisions for Spanish, there is usually one group for German. At the end of Year 9 girls choose one or more Modern Foreign Language to study at GCSE and the number of girls opting for two Modern Languages have been very healthy in recent years.
At GCSE level in French, setting depends on option blocks. Where timetabling permits, girls are put into one of 2 sets for GCSE Spanish.
In Years 11, 12 and, 13 pupils have on extra conversation class per week in each language in order to prepare for the oral examinations.
Currently in the Sixth Form we have two groups of A2 French and one of A2 Spanish. German teaching is shared between MTBS and MTGS staff. At AS there is one group of French and Spanish. All A level Spanish teaching for both MTGS and MTBS takes place at MTGS.
Both for GCSE and A level pupils follow the AQA syllabus for languages and the department prides itself on its consistently good examination results.
We are a busy, active and highly successful department providing many activities for our students in addition to mainstream teaching enabling them to enjoy their language learning to the full.
