Year 9 Ski Trip - February 2011
The Year 9 Ski Trip to Austria in February had long been awaited and was the first school ski trip in 3 years. Those Year 9s involved had a lot to live up to following the senior trip to Wagrain in 2008 which was one of the best ever!
The journey was gruelling, over 26 hours by coach, but did they complain.....NO. When we arrived in Mittersill it was too late for ski hire, we had to do all of that the following morning which meant we were up at 7.00am, but did they moan....NO. Gustav, our ski hire man, was totally shocked by the speed at which our girls moved and there we were, all 47 of us, booted up with skis and poles on the nursery slopes waiting for our instructors and that basically set the seal on our holiday. The girls were absolutely amazing, attentive, punctual and great fun to be with. It was a pleasure to hear so many compliments about the girls and they were a credit to themselves and the school. It felt like we were all on one big family holiday and so girls, from Auntie Di, Dec, Uncle Brian. Mrs D, The Doc, Miss Jackson and myself thank you, We hope you enjoyed the trip half as much as we enjoyed being with you.
Sports Star Hayley - 2010
Last year's leaver Hayley Rigby has competed in the National Rowing Championships in July this year. Hayley won a Bronze medal in this event however was only 0.2 second off a silver!
She also took part in the National Schools Rowing Championships and reached the finals coming 6th overall. An incredible 4 out of the 5 girls that beat her are members of the GB squad.
Our star sportswoman also did the triathlon at Olympic distance (1.5km swim, 40km bike, 10km run).
In her swim time she was the fastest female by 5 minutes and the 5th fastest overall including all the men. Her bike time (1hr 30min) put her in second female place and, unsurprisingly, the woman who beat her is an elite triathlete!
This was Hayley's last sporting event for Merchant Taylors' Girls' and we wish her good luck in her future career.

Jumping for Joy - November 2010
At the end of October the newly formed Merchant Taylors' Girls' School Equestrian Team competed in the Inter-Schools Championships Tournament held at Aintree Equestrian Centre.
Four teams across 3 classes were entered with each class having jumps of increasing height. Most classes had approximately 25 boys and girls competing as individuals and between 5 and 7 teams in the whole competition. Merchant Taylors' team had girls competing from Year 7 through to Year 11 in each class.
In a very exciting day of competition the girls, with tremendous support from their families, achieved 1st place in Class 1, 1st place in Class 2 and 3rd place in Class 3.
Lucy Adams and Charlotte Hodson were the individual Champions in Class 1 & 2 respectively with Taylor Cowell-McGlory coming 3rd in Class 1 and Corinne Molyneux finishing 3rd overall in Class 3.
In the first ever competition the newly formed School team came home with trophies, medals, sashes & rosettes - a great achievement. Well done girls!

Rebecca heads to European Karate Championships - November 2010
Rebecca Rawcliffe is heading for the European Shotokan Karate-do Championships in Koblenz at the end of this month. The Sixth Former has been selected to join the England team squad, led by Andy Sherry and Frank Brennan, to compete in both individual and team events.
Rebecca, aged 17, is a 2nd dan and trains with Halewood Shotokan Karate Club at Huyton Leisure Centre. Rebecca's older brother Joe, who attended Merchant Taylors' Boys' School and is now at Liverpool University, has also been competing on a national level for a number of years.
Rebecca said 'I really enjoy competing - especially the feeling of winning. I also enjoy the social side of the sport. I am looking forward to the Championships but expecting tough competition especially from the Austrian and Polish girls."
Rebecca plans to continue training and competing whilst studying for her A Levels in Chemistry, Biology, PE and Psychology. She is also hoping to represent the UK in the World Championships next year.

The Middle School Swimming Gala March 2010
The Middle School Swimming Gala always promises to be an exciting event and this year’s proved to be one of the most exciting for a long time. Considering we had our Junior National Team swimming for their various houses, the chance of records being broken looked very possible. However, no-one expected a batch of 8 records to be smashed, not even Mr Whalley or Mrs Stenson!!
It was Mrs Bush’s first ever gala as she was presenting the trophies on behalf of Mrs Robinson and she certainly enjoyed the experience. Well done to all those girls who participated and also to the spectators who helped make this a most enjoyable and successful event.

Australia and Fiji Sports Tour - July 2009
In the Summer of 2009 staff took girls on the trip of a lifetime to Australia and Fiji to play hockey and netball as well as reserve some time for soaking up the sun and the sights! See photographs below
Star Players
17 year old Nicole Whalley is the youngest player to earn selection for the North of England under-21 squad.
The Bickerstaffe young hockey star has played for Lancashire and the North at both under-15 and under-18 level, and now moves up to the under-21s which is traditionally chosen from top club players rather than top school players.
Nicole, who is in the Sixth Form, already represents Premier League Club Bowdon, mainly in their second XI, and ultimately has ambitions to make the England team and appear in the Olympics. She concedes that, with her sights set on studying Medicine at Oxford, "That ambition will probably have to be put on hold until after my university studies."
