December 13th and 14th saw two days of sporting celebration for the opening of the New Ian Robinson Sports Centre, incorporating the Sports Hall, the Margaret Mann Dance Studio and the Peter Little fitness suite. Old Boy and ex-rugby international Ben Kay kicked off proceedings by unveiling the plaque on the Tuesday. Mrs Liz Robinson and Ian's mother had both also kindly agreed to participate.
On Wednesday the annual Merchant Taylors' Northwood match took place alongside an ‘Old Boys' rugby game. There were VIP appearances by Lucy Creamer, British Climbing Champion; Beth Tweddle, three times World Champion Gymnast; Kyle Taylor, who is a British Dance Champion and Old Boy of the School, accompanied by his partner Polina Shklyaeva. These took place contiguous to workshops, activities and performances by pupils showcasing the fantastic new facility.
Finally the Sporting Start Fundraising Celebration Dinner took place on Wednesday evening at the Crown Plaza. Dripping with sports personalities including Kenny Dalglish, and Jamie Carragher, the evening was a glittering end to the two days. An ‘Audience with' style panel with Alan Hansen, John Parrott, Kelly Cates and Tony Smith was hosted by James Allen.
Many thanks to all those involved and to anyone who contributed in any way, even if it was just to come along and have a look. See videos of activities and speeches, plus photos, below.
