PSHE

Personal, Social, Health and Economic education is organised into two programmes of study; personal wellbeing and economic wellbeing and financial capability. It combines the more traditional personal, social and health education, including sex education, with the social and emotional aspects of learning, careers education and enterprise.

At Key Stage 3, PSHE is delivered by form tutors once a week. The schemes of work have recently been updated to include techniques to improve learning; such as discovering learning styles, discussing learning environments and developing knowledge of how the brain functions. Other areas covered include healthy lifestyles, the media and rights and responsibilities. Year 7 girls, follow a structured first term, designed to help them to settle in and adapt to the new environment of secondary school.

At Key Stage 4, PSHE is delivered by specialist teachers in a timetabled double period each week. Each year, groups rotate between five subject areas including; career guidance, economic education, ICT, politics and citizenship, study skills and drug awareness.
Sex Education is taught by a dedicated team in a single half day block in Years 7-9 and by the Head of Department, Mrs Houghton, during PSHE in Years 10 and 11. Personal identity and self confidence, puberty, contraception and STI's are discussed in a moral framework encouraging positive values and safe and respectful relationships.

The aims of the department are to ensure that girls become:

  • Successful students who enjoy learning, make progress and achieve
  • Confident individuals, who are able to live safe and healthy lives
  • Responsible citizens who make a positive contribution to society
