Religious Studies

2011 Examination Results

"Religious Studies helps us to understand ourselves and what is going on in the world around us". (Yr 11 student)

In the Religious Studies Department at MTGS we try to encourage girls to reflect on human feelings, beliefs and values and provide the opportunity to consider ultimate life questions and the issues raised by such questions. By pursuing a multi-faith academic approach in our syllabus, we are able to take account of the various faith backgrounds and beliefs of our students and encourage the community atmosphere which is such an important part of our school life.

"Religious Studies is not just based on Christianity. We learn about the different religions and beliefs in the world. We can appreciate different religious perspectives". (Yr 10 student)

A variety of teaching methods used in lessons allow girls to develop their knowledge and interest in the subject. Debates and discussions, project work, independent learning activities, drama/creative work and teacher led lessons are just a few of the methods used.

Religious Studies is taught to all girls until they reach the sixth form. A good number of students have opted to take GCSE Religious Studies in order to study religious issues at a deeper level. The AS/A2 options have also been popular with girls who wish to explore philosophical, ethical and scientific approaches.

We also enjoy visiting places of religious interest and past trips have included visits to local churches, a Liverpool Mosque and the Jewish Museum in Manchester. Visits to the Liverpool Empire to see "Joseph" always prove popular with Yr 8 pupils.

Our students have enjoyed success in local and national R.S. competitions and the school competition to design an Easter Egg with an appropriate name certainly produces some imaginative and humorous entries - the Eggsplorer, Egglu and Eggspired - to name just a few!

Overall, here in the Religious Studies department we try to give our girls the chance to study issues and questions that matter in life. We encourage the importance of an open mind in weighing up arguments and forming conclusions and we aim to equip the girls with academic knowledge, qualifications and appropriate skills for the future.
