Jasmine's cooking up a storm - March 2011

The Home Economics department have taken part in the Rotary Club ‘Young Chef 2011' competition

Four Yr 8 girls took part in the initial Crosby area round held in school in November and competed against Yr 10 pupils from Chesterfield HS. This was organised by Rotarian Mrs Val Alexander.

The Judge placed Jasmine Lynch in first place with Lyndsey Richards, Aimee Ellis and Sophia Papageorgiou runners up

Jasmine then went to the next round of the completion which was held at Deeside College in February where she discovered she was considerably younger than the other finalists who were mostly catering students. She was accompanied by her family, Mrs Jones and Rotarian Mr Geoff Andrews. The brief was to prepare, cook and serve a 3-course healthy meal for 2 people to cost no more than £15 and Jasmine chose Thai fish cakes, followed by chicken casserole with herb dumplings and rhubarb meringue.

Jasmine was an absolute credit to both herself and school and we are extremely proud of her achievement.

Year 6 Boys visit

In June 2010 Year 6 Boys visited the Senior Girls' School to bake some bread!

Open Events October 2009

The Department was busy on both occasions mainly due to the appetising smells that radiated from T1. Several pupils volunteered for both sessions and it was pleasing to have a selection of pupils from across the years 7 - 11.

The visitors appeared to enjoy what they saw and most tasted a sample of lemon drizzle cake and went off with the recipe.

Independent Learning Tasks - Year 7

As part of the Year 7 Home Economics curriculum, girls are asked to undertake a piece of independent work to develop their research and presentation skills. Practical work covered during the course encourages the girls to use a wide variety of kitchen equipment in the preparation of a variety of dishes. The task set requires such equipment to be researched and resultant findings presented to the rest of the class. This method of learning, we believe, extends knowledge as well as promoting all important social skills.

Techonology Day - July 2008

Year 10, along with the Food Technology staff, spent an excellent day towards the end of the academic year addressing a brief which involved them in product making, packaging design and presentation. The girls had only three hours to design a logo for their product, produce the packaging and bake the cookies!

The pictures show us all having fun whilst, hopefully, learning new skills.
