The Junior Harrison Group

The Junior Harrison Group comprises approximately 20% of each year group who are invited to be members for one academic year. The girls are selected through a combination of criteria: MidYIS/YELLIS scores, staff recommendation and examination performance. Parents are involved and the lists are regularly reviewed. The girls have a varied and lively programme each term where attendance is monitored. It is expected that behaviour and academic work will be exemplary.

‘Young Apprentice' write up from Thursday March 1st

The Y9 Junior Harrison Group had a wonderful day on Thursday March 1st when they participated in a ‘Young Apprentice' day organised by Wiser Words, an Oxford based company specialising in workshops designed to provide stretch and challenge to able pupils.

The challenge was the imminent arrival of Hollywood film producers who were looking for the creative business minds of the future in the fashion industry, hoping to strike up a deal with a fresh new company. They arrive for the grand finale where all those competing will be showcasing their ideas. The competition involved the choice of a company name, trading for appropriate materials, the production of an eye-catching signature piece of clothing, preparing a pitch ... whilst keeping all the accounts in order! The day promoted innovation, creative flair and good business sense. It was also a lot of fun!

At the end of the day the various groups made their pitch with a catwalk demonstration of their product, accompanied by appropriate music of their choice, with every member of the team involved. They all completed a SWOT analysis of the factors involved in order to be a successful investigator, communicator, decision maker and time manager. An excellent day!

‘Island Survivors'

In September the Year 9 members of the Junior Harrison Group had an extremely lively and stimulating workshop called ‘Island Survivors'. This was provided by Wiser Words, an Oxford based company that we have used on several occasions. This course aims to promote independent thinking where the participants, being stranded on a desert island, have to lead and organise their own community. They must devise a clever survival strategy, tackle tricky dilemmas as the story unfolds, organise the workforce and motivate them, and decide how to elect their own leaders. This is cross-curricular in every way and uses a combination of practical and intellectual challenges which demand initiative, strategic thinking and invoke a strong sense of responsibility. The girls find themselves tackling the most controversial issues in politics, ethics and sociology, and asking questions that address the history of ideas!
The Y9 thoroughly enjoyed this workshop and impressed the presenters. See below for photographs:
