Visiting Artist Jane Adams paints MTBS
Jane Adams, who exhibited at the Vitreum at the end of 2009 along with Stephen Collett and Nicole Renee has painted the Boys' School.
Her collection looks at some of the wonderful features of Liverpool's architecture, particularly those which are disappearing or are significant to the lives of ordinary people. They are created by first mono- printing a skeleton image onto tissue paper. This is then bleached and left to dry. Once dry the image is worked into, using collage, watercolour, oil pastel and pen and ink.
"My inspiration comes from my journeys through the city. It is the architecture, humble or grand, and its obvious connection to the past, which ignites my curiosity. Our personal histories are anchored in our geography and a snapshot of a particular place can spark strong memories and emotions. I am always amazed at how Art can arouse such responses and I love being part of the process."
National Poetry Day
To celebrate national Poetry Day - eighteen members of staff read a poem of their choice in the Vitreum during morning break and throughout lunchtime to an appreciative audience of girls. There was a mixture of classic English Literature to funny poems, to two members of staff who had written their own compositions and some in other languages. Miss O'Connor began proceedings with ‘The Lesson' by Roger McGough followed by a reflective Mrs Myring ‘How Do I Love Thee?' by Elizabeth Barnett-Browning.
Mrs Carter did the splendid ‘The Lion and Albert' by Marriott Edgar followed by a very enthusiastic Mr Price reading ‘The Three Little Pigs' by Roald Dahl. Mrs Cecil read her favourite First World War poem ‘Dulce Decorum Est' by Wilfred Owen with Mr Lamb cleverly linking ‘Was this a face' by Christopher Marlowe to his Classics teaching. Mrs Butler gave a spirited performance of ‘No Thank You John' by Christina Rossetti followed by a very personal rendition of ‘The Good Morrow' by John Dunne from Mrs Wadsworth. Mrs Southworth chose Robert Browning's ‘The Pied Piper of Hamelin' but only three verses followed by a poem by Goethe called ‘Rattenfänger'. Mrs Barry read ‘Matildah' by Edward Lear and Miss Ladbrook read ‘Stop All the Clocks' by WH Auden.
Mr Gill read a poem which he dedicated to the Maths Department called ‘Minus 3.6' by Jeff Hattersley. Mr Evans read another First World War poem ‘Anthem for Doomed Youth' by Wilfred Owen and Madame Mistry read the French poet, Victor Hugo's ‘Demain dès l'aube'. Mr Short read one of his own poems entitled ‘Pottery' as did Mrs Barrington whose poem was called ‘Passing By'. Mrs Doyle read the Spanish poem by Gustavo Bécquer simply called ‘XIV' and Mrs Whalley finished off in French with Chant d'automne' by Beaudelaire.
It was a successful first time and we hope to repeat poetry readings in the future.
