On Monday 19th June the U11 cricket team travelled to Blackburn to play in the final of the Lancashire Cup (Plate). Having won the main trophy the last two years the boys were keen to come home with some gold coloured medals.
It was a 12 over a side pairs match with each pair batting three overs. At the toss, the opposition- Hulme Court Grammar School from Oldham- elected to bat first. We bowled pretty well, although one or two of our lads were a bit rusty. In the first 9 overs we picked up five wickets effectively restricting their score (5 runs are deducted for each wicket). However their last pair contained a Lancashire U11 player who promptly laid into all our bowlers smashing 5 sixes and 2 fours in his short innings. This meant we faced the more daunting task of chasing 64 to win.
All our batsmen stepped up to the mark and we did not lose a wicket. After 9 overs we passed their score with ease. Oliver Raw then played sensibly and cautiously to see us through a tense last overs to win the game by two runs.
The boys were all delighted and enjoyed a tasty lunch provided by our hosts before travelling back to Crosby.
